Comments: Updating previous entry of about 7 years ago!! We also had an embryonic surf crew late '60's - Hilsks (hugely missed), Priddle and Dork (just had hip replacements in Perth Oz), McCarten, Marshy,Rockeys (bumped into Phil and Paul in the line up at Saunton a few years ago)Dave Llestyn, Pendar, Pete Jones. Still hitting the surf but PJ reckons I could be on my own these days? Keep with the sweet music

Comments: Worked in Llandudno during the school summer holidays of 68 and 69 - 'in-crowd' coffee bar (next to old cinema in Mostyn St, don't recall name who does?)and Seaforth Hotel (not recommended). Went to Paynes every Saturday and Wednesday nights and the Beachcomber on Friday (? hotel basement at the of Mostyn Street). A fantastic time dancing to Hilks discotron? on the prom-bandstand until late, trips to Manchester, girls form Llandudno and Llanwrst etc. Regular Paynes crowd from Bangor in 1969 included Haden Price, Phil Jones, Medwin Coffee, Gary Semakin, Peter Roberts (Prof), Dennis Tesco, Bruce Williams and other less regular Colin W, Aled O, William G (Itch), Ian R, Hughsey. Also girls from Bangor and Llanfaurfechan too many to name - Angela, Linda and Kath (both worked in the Paynes tea room), Janet M, Moira, Elleri, Carol G, Linda R, Shirley, & friend from Llanfairfechan, Mads, Kim... Don't recognise too many people from the pics seem later on, but recall some names. I remember it all in colour ! Pic 71 includes from left Doug Goodhall, don't know, John Ivor, Shirley Evans, Angela Jones and Keith Jones (good friend of mine from infant school onwards). I jumped out of the 'scene' in 1970 my part got too D scary (there were casualties). The mod thing was great so were the 60s sounds. I'm not into nostalgia , but this is hard to resist

Love and miss my Dad so much, if there is anybody who has any photo's or stories I would love to hear or see them and share them with my sister Colette.

Comments: I've only just discovered the site although Rob did mention it to me last time I saw him in Tesco!! I cringe when I look at the fashions - but in the words of Freddie Mercury - it worked at the time!! I can remember standing on the balcony and flicking fag ends down on to the dancers below!! And Norman Gardner dancing to Spirit in the Sky and when everyone joined in the whole dance floor would be bouncing up and down - you didn't have to move - just stand there! Brilliant site - strange how the girls don't look much different - but the men!!??

Comments: Just found this site and thought you might like to be dragged back to the Sixties when The Jets/Four Jets used to play at Paynes Cafe Royal. Dougie Hare and sister Ann were the singers. Also, playing there in 1962/3 were Danny Jay the The Jaguars - all in the 6th Form at John Bright at the time. The line up was Roger Thomas - vocals, Mike Collins - drums, Mike Conway - lead guitar, Tudor Williams - rhythm guitar, and Ed Jones (myself) on bass guitar. Martin Peal replaced tudor on rhythm guitar in 1963. We all then went our separate ways. But we had a fantastic time at Paynes. Happy memories. Ed Jones.

Comments: Just found the site, only went to Paynes a few times as being from Rhyl, and a Palace regular plus being a scooter boy around 71 time frame it just was not the safest thing to do as we all remember those battles as kids, regardless of being into soul music. I do remember seeing Johnny Johnson and Donnie Elbert there. I know I went a couple more times but can't remember when. I do remember many of the soul crowd from there though from later years on the scene. Great site for people to see their youth and come together today once again. Cheers LA Rob

thanks for the mail. good to see the photos of john ivor,

I have a few memories from those days but not so good with names. living in Perth Australia is one Alan Hughes originally from Bangor, and one of the Welsh wheel crew. who used to visit on a regular basis along with Harry and Tony from Gwesper, Clive Porter and Geoff Dodd, Horrocks, Ian Jones. Dougie Goodall. Postie, and so many more whose names elude me..

The band that was playing the gigs round N.Wales during the late 60ts including the Palace in Rhyl was "Just Enough" and I believe they came from Queensferry.

Is it possible for anybody to get me John Ivor's phone number, e mail address or some way of contacting him.

Best

Vince
Thanks

In alphabetical order: Brian Craven, Geoff Dodd, Billy Guy, Hiltz, Little Ian Jones, Keith Parry, John Ivar Roberts, Baz shields and I could go on but time is short. It was a cool thing. Please keep on dancing and does anyone know anything about the Faces I remember? If so post what you know because I'll be checking the guest book periodically, all the best and all my love to all the Faces.

Comments: Hi guys
hope the reunion went well.
Piccies seem to confirm this.
Like the sounds page, looking forward to newly found & classic Motown + the Anthems.
Shades of Blue takes the award so far, for me anyway:)
Just noticed the "Cheater" track is carrying the wrong 'clip info', hope this helps.
Finally, I've put a link to the site on my humble page.

Comments: I tried to post this message yesterday but screwed up some where, I have just got off the phone after talking To Dave Price and John Ivor at the Reunion and it sounds like a great night as nights at Paynes always were. I was in Llandudno for about 4 days in the summer along with my daughters soccer team from Canada and spent about 20 minutes outside of Paynes telling them what a brilliant place it had been, that short visit down memory lane was nothing compared to the photo section the first one I open included a very old and dear friend Pearl Hobson along with many other faces, god everyone looks so young but the eyes are all wide open. Well one must get back to watching the snow fall, Hello once again to all the old soulies Dan, Hefin, Ivor, Pricey, Howley and memories of Conn.

Comments: What a memory I just seen a photo of my old heart throb Pearl Hobson, plus a lot of old friends and associates. Little Ian is in California living the good life and I will tell him to visit this page. I just screwed Dave Price up on the phone because I wouldn't tell him who I was - promisd to phone him at the reunion tomorrow night.
I was home in the summer visiting with my daughters soccer team we spent 4 days in Llandudno, Kimmel Hotel and about an hour outside of Paynes explaining to her and her friends what a brilliant place it was also had a beer a Jean's house on the Saturday night. I wish I could be there tomorrow night a lot of memories had faded having been away for so long but a lot came back after the summer trip and now looking at these pictures, tell Dan I'm having a flashback. It funny because a lot of the people I meet over here from the Manchester/Liverpool area all remember Paynes after spending their holidays in Llandudno. Keep up the Reunions who knows maybe next year I can make it, its so strange to read names like Geoff Pike, Howley, Doddsy, John Ivor, plus all the girls and yes Pearl you are still my heart throb :)

Comments: Well what a surprise to see this site. A lot of the faces and names I recognised from the photos, but an awful lot were younger and later on in the Paynes era. Especially a group of young girls at the time, we used to call them the "teeny boppers", odd really as we were only 3/4 years older, but it seemed like a decade at the time. Rebecca Holden was a name I remember as one bright young thing. It was a great time and very nostalgic now to say the least. I and others were originally Winters guys and we migrated to Paynes when it opened so I think we were there at the beginning. I used to go to Paynes with Barry Shields, Gwyn Jones, John Ivor, David and Hywel Jones, Terry Lloyd to name but a few. Funny thing is you never lose the "soul" do you? My wife and I always go to see Edwin Starr when he is around London and the south, he is an amazing live act. So to all who will attend the Reunion tomorrow have a good night, enjoy and get "down on the floor", as who used to sing??? Come on now, ok how about touch of velvet sting of ???? fill in the missing word in the title and a bonus if you remember the band.
Have fun

My lasting memory of Paynes was when I was tripped up on a New Years Eve (was going out with Vaughan Leonard at the time). Spent New Years Eve getting my eye stitched up and still bear the scar! No names no pack drill BUT the culprit who tripped me up came round to my Mam & Dad's the next day - together with loads of people and drank their sherry!! Come on - own up!! Will give you till November then I'm setting the record straight at the reunion!! We will all be there - me, Ann, Ruby etc etc!!!!!

Comments: I couldn't believe it when I saw this site and it all came flooding back - well some of it at least. I showed it to my 17yr old daughter and 19 year old son(!!!) and they both said - you mean people went out dressed like that???

I used to live in Albert Drive in Deganwy and have kept in touch with some guys from school - John Griffiths, Ned Coackley and I have a brother Glynn living in London and a sister Bet living near London, who went to Loretto.

Keep up the good work guys - fantastic job.

By the way for anyone who has friends or relatives in Australia who went to John Bright (or any other school really in Llandudno!!!) we are having the second reunion of former John Bright students in Sydney on Saturday 24 August 2002.

We found Anne Moore, Ollie Williams, Lillian Jones and many more through the friends reunited web site.

I can be contacted on johnaj@bigpond.net.au

Good luck

For those of you with bad memories remember Robert Redhead??!! the other half of Discos Inc. along with Gilbert well I found an old North Wales Weekly News advert for when we DJ'd at Paynes and in fact were the last to DJ there before it finally closed down. I've closed down many a fine place in my time. For all those who reached the big 50 this year, like me on July 6th, many happy returns.

For the soul lovers amongst us I still have many photos of artists we promoted by The North Wales Soul Club ( which Robert and myself started in 1973)along with posters and autographs...all gathering dust! Looking forward to another great night in November and seeing all the 'old' and familiar faces.

Those days I thought my Ben Sherman and my two-tone tights would have to be surgically removed I wore them so much. I have never been so emotionally evoked by music since the days of soul and backdrop bliss and that's even after seeing Rolf Harris this weekend live at Glastonbury Festival !

Hiya to my old Paynes mates...Pearl, Carys, Jenny, Haf "balcony-hopper" Williams, Nia the Knuckles, Linda mur mur Smith, Gina the screamer and Roz.

Look forward to exchanging memories and comparing wrinkles in November with you all.

Fabulous that a place I have not been for thirty years can have a website.
Had many great nights in Paynes although I wish I had stayed sober more often to remember them.  My outstanding memory was of Joey Jones nearly losing his football career by coming back every weekend to fight with the other "Parrots".  Never see them mentioned although there were a lot of them in the gang.

I have a few more names to add to Picture 7.  Bottom left is Jacqui Owen, next to me Linda (nee Thomas) behind Suzanne looks like Norma (nee Gamble), Andy I think is Andy Fitton, behind the guy on the bottom row looks like Gail McCloughlin - hope this is of use.
I now live in Warrington although I still have family in Llandudno namely Jeff Thomas who I think works with you at the Royal Mail but it was my sister Gail who told me about the pic and the web site as someone thought I was her, this is a great site and I shall certainly visit it with interest and look forward to the reunion in November,

I remember when I first started going to Paynes we used to wear Adidas training shoes with jeans and suit jackets.  Strange that those Adidas trainers have now been reintroduced as part of their Adidas Originals range (I work for Adidas now)  I remember that as well as being open on a Saturday night, Paynes was also open midweek in the summer - I know that because Iwent there the night before my Latin 'O' level exam and guess what - yes I failed.  I still like the old Tamla and Soul music and when I get the chance I listen to it at home.  I now live in Mold and work near Stockport.  I haven't been to any of the reunions yet but you never know I may turn up this year.
All the best, the web site is very interesting and I've included in my favourites
cheers
