Dick Collins has been found alive and well and living in a red london bus on mars (sorry I'm mistaken that was Elvis).  In fact he is is living in the Bristol area and as you all probably know already he will be attending the reunion and will play his favourite soul tunes from Paynes and beyond.  Looking forward to it already.

Welcome to the Paynes Reunion web site.

Most of the original pages are up and running once more.  New features on the web site include a tunes jukebox, a video jukebox and links to the Tudno FM radio show.

Just need to include photos of adverts and of a Winters reunion that was held at the conference centre (about 5 piccies, I think).

cheers

The Last Ever Paynes Reunion @ Venue Cymru
November 2008

DJs:  Big E,  Dave Hanson, Gary Carr, Lloydy
Attendance:  400+

The last ever Paynes reunion, seems like a bit of a funny thing to be saying especially as they have been a bit of an institution for the last 13 years.  Why was this the last one - answer is the rising costs of renting the venue and security etc. etc.  The idea originally was to raise money for charity, but for the last 3 years it has been touch and go in terms of making a profit, so enough is enough.

BLUES & SOUL

I had to put this on the front page 'cos I've been trying to get my hands on a copy for simply ages.  It's a scan of the Dave Godin (Keep the Faith, Right On Now) Column from Blues and Soul Magazine issue number 182.  It has a write up about Paynes and mentions a few well known names - I'll let you read it.

Thanks go to MikeH (author of www.soul-source.net which is a web site dedicated to the rare / northern soul scene and has write ups on events etc.) who dug the article out for me.

PAYNES CAFE ROYALE

Paynes was that wonderful place on Mostyn Street, where the youth of Llandudno (and the rest of North Wales) gathered to bop the night away to soulful sounds of the sixties and seventies.  It's really bizarre, but some of the friendships / relationships and even marriages which were started back in the days of Paynes Cafe Royal (every Saturday and Wednesday, and Mondays and Friday at the height of the summer season) are still going strong today.  It has been really good knowing that you will be able to catch up with old friends at least twice a year thanks to the reunions, and of course its a good excuse to dig out those dancing shoes (that's you Mike Smith), blow off the cobwebs and move with the groove once more.  Despite the aching legs next morning.

The reunions have been held annually, usually at the North Wales Conference Centre (Nov) and the Grand Hotel (March/April), and have always been a sell out event.

This year will be the 13th anniversary of the reunion so make sure you get those tickets early to avoid disappointment.  The night promises to be fantastic night of dancing to all your old favourite soul and northern tunes together with a fantastic live act.   An excellent night out and support for your local charities, what could be better.

"Get Ready 'Cos Were Gonna Swing, We're Goin', goin' goin' to A Happening"

Over the last twelve years we have had some memorable reunions with most of them being absolute sell-outs, resulting in many people panicking at the last minute because they did not have tickets (that's usually Jimmy).  On average each event has sold 500 or so tickets to us "people of later years" (blame that one on Paul Rocky) and has had us groove the night away to the soul sounds of the 60ts and 70ts, and a good time was had by all.

The November Reunions (Conference Centre max 550 people) has seen many a fine act appear to entertain us on the evening.

I can recall that the band for the very first reunion were called The Informers, an eight piece band with two vocalists, 3 brass, rhythm and bass guitar and drums.  They did a really good set and included many tunes that were played at The Twisted Wheel.  They really impressed me because they opened their set with a version of My Elusive Dream / Moses & Joshua Dillard, absolutely excellent.

Since then we have had appearances from The Real Thing, The Aces, Kenny Weathers & the Emotions, The American Four Tops Show, and of course the absolute master visited us twice and was a very good friend of the reunions, sadly is no longer with us, none other than the late great Edwin Starr.  Have a look at the top of the Paynes photo page to see Edwin back in the early 70ts standing on the stairs in Paynes.  Edwin ALWAYS gave us a great night, singing all the Motown and Ric-Tic classics (usually at some stage with his backing singers, Sue Jones & Co).

Have a good look around the web site, we hope you enjoy the visit.

LATEST PHOTOS

Bit of a cheek calling these the latest photos 'cos I've had them for a good 12 months - just haven't got round to putting them on the web site.

Apologies for the delay - here they are.

Check out the photos page for a list of the who is in which photo.

Why bother ??

Since the Paynes Reunion / Revival night have been taking place all profits made on the night have always been donated to local charities, with many charities benefiting from YOUR generosity.

In the past, profits have been distributed among many charities but it has been decided that for the foreseeable future any profit made from Reunion/Revival nights will be donated to the North Wales Multi-disability Football Club, which is based in Llandudno.

This is a recently formed organisation and as such is in desperate need of funds to enable travel and suitable accommodation to be acquired when needed.

To date the team have been extremely successful and have represented Wales in their equivalent of the World Cup which took place in Spain during the summer of 2003.

Dave Godin dies aged 68, Oct 15th 2004

Perhaps the name of Dave Godin does not mean very much to many of you, but to soul fans around Britain his name was always synonymous with black soul music.

From a personal perspective he was a constant companion throughout my teenage years via his Blues & Soul magazine column (1972 - 1978).

Dave Godin was the soul evangelist, preaching the word to the soul masses.  You simply had to read his column to know what was hot and what was not, he invented the term "northern soul" and reviewed hundreds of soul sides and venues (see below) over the years, and did more to promote the cause of black american soul music in the UK than anybody.   In issue no. 182 he was on holiday in Llandudno and visited Paynes - to see this column check out the BLUES & SOUL section on the left of this page.
